Some may, but we’re not giving up on summer just
yet! And even when the sun doesn’t shine, the beautiful
West Country has lots of alternatives
to those lovely hot beach days for which we all long. So
take your minds off the weather forecast
for a while and have a look at what else there is on offer.
If you haven’t booked your holiday yet and don’t
fancy airport delays, we still have a few holiday
homes for the August weeks, one
or two even in Cornwall. So have a look at
our website
or give us a call, we are ever ready to
help you with holiday homes we’ve seen and to answer
any queries you may have.

And again in Somerset, the village of Wedmore
on the Somerset Levels has been enjoying a Harvest
Home festival for the past 85 years. This year
it’s on August 17th.

mythical voyage from Bude to St Germans, their
new giant floor game explores Cornwall’s many mystic
monsters and spooky spirits. With
huge toadstools, various forfeits and a wishing well along
the way, you’ll encounter a number of crazy characters
during your race to the finish line.
Or grab some bait and go crabbing -

and bucket, expert help and a safe and friendly place
to test your crabbing skills - they’ll
even do the messy bits! Lasts 45mins and runs weather

And how about a bit of fishing? At this
time of year our coastal waters are so full of mackerel
that catching them is child’s play. In many coastal
towns you'll find mackerel fishing boat trips
on offer to help you do just that. It's an often under-rated,
delicious fish that deserves your attention.

Padstow to Rock Charity Swim - August 25th
Like lemmings into the sea the hardy volunteers go and,
fortunately, emerge on the other side intact and in good
spirits. Anyone can enter the swim, though it is recommended
for strong swimmers only and the entry fee is £25.
It’s all for a good cause and you do get a pasty
for your effort!! Spectators can view from Padstow or
Rock and the more support for the swimmers, the better!!

The event is held on August Bank Holiday Monday and involves
the entire port of Newlyn, the quays, market and related
land being taken over by stalls and stands.
The event is very popular and thousands of visitors attend.
In addition to the more commercial side, there’s an
extensive programme of music in the marquee,
water-based events and some vessels are open to the public
and, of course, lots of fish to buy and try…
|
| …and not far from here on August 7th Morvah
Pasty Day is celebrated with live local bands,
pasties and refreshments. |
Sitting bumper to bumper inching your way along the A30
towards your holiday in Cornwall should now be a thing of
the past thanks to the opening of the newly dualled A30
which takes the road round this notorious bottle-neck and
wings you on your way to the end of Cornwall.

| The 2008 Helpful Holidays brochure is
nearing completion and you can get a look now at some of
the new holiday homes we have on our website. There’s
a lovely barn conversion near Totnes
(L69)
and a bungalow with a pool in Lymington
(V2). |
We’re well aware of how difficult things may
be in your area and perhaps the problems you may have
faced in getting to the West Country in recent weeks.
We do hope that wherever you’re going on holiday
in the coming weeks, your journey will be smooth and your
stay relaxing and fun.
Best wishes
