Capers indeed! Lovely to see the sun over the last few days - just in time for the Bank Holiday and lovely May Day celebrations - good timing. Now we're looking forward to Whitsun. There’s plenty on over the half-term holiday (see below) and we've some lovely places left for that week. “We must save the pebble ridge, at all costs!” This is an old custom whereby residents of Northam, in order to protect their grazing rights, throw pebbles, which have been washed down the beach, back onto the pebble ridge.

| Devon County Show (15th to 17th May), The Royal Bath and West Show (28th to 31st May) and The Royal Cornwall Show (5th to 7th June). These are all great annual agricultural shows and always very popular so you need to get on your way in good time to avoid any possible queues. This year’s main attractions include a spectacular motocross display at the Devon and Cornwall shows; a stunt carriage driving display team at Royal Bath and West plus, of course, all the usual horse riding events and livestock and wonderful shopping opportunities! |

….and on June 29th, Pecorama is the venue for the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Great West Run for Classic Cars, a superb display of vintage and classic vehicles. Pecorama is a great visitor attraction up the hill from the lovely fishing village of Beer in Devon.

The Rescorla Festival takes place in the Clay Country around St Austell from 27th to 29th June and will see the revival after sixty years of The Snail Creep, a processional dance once engaged in by the entire population of Rescorla. This festival celebrates the music, literature, dance, food and drink and lots more in this sometimes overlooked part of Cornwall. Look out for stories of Cornish Heavyweight Wrestling Champion Captain Sammy Coombe.

The popularity of English vineyards grows and grows (perhaps you heard the visit to Camel Valley Vineyard on Radio 4 last week – but it was on a bit early!). From 24th May to 1st June there’s a week-long celebration of English Wines with tours of vineyards and promotional offers at lots of restaurants across the West Country.
