Misty mornings... balmy days...
good news! Thank heavens for one last heave
from summer before the evenings draw in and there’s
a nip in the morning air. Come to the West Country
now for great walking and wildlife watching. Take
to the hills or woods for hiking amongst a purple
and red-hazed mass of sloes and hawthorn berries, golden
leaves and bracken. Take a picnic and watch the
buzzards wheel. If you’re lucky (and
quiet) you might see or at least hear a stag swaggering
and boasting for the girls or glimpse the salmon
starting to run the rivers as they rise. Walk the coastal
path to see the big, storm-born rollers thump the
Cornish cliffs. All very splendid
– a good time of year.

Numerous illuminated carnivals
are a spectacular part of autumn in the South West; the
links below give all the dates and locations where you can
join the evening crowds. Guy Fawkes Day
in Devon offers a stupendous, dazzling display of
fireworks and drama at Sticklepath, near Okehampton
on 5th November. Or, of course, you just can’t miss
the famous tar barrels at Ottery
St Mary in east Devon, also on 5th November.
