| If you can’t make it away soon, take a break
in the autumn and enjoy some West Country rambling.
Miss the crowds, enjoy a slower pace of life,
de-stress and try out some of the fine food
on offer. The Devon Celebration of Food
runs throughout October, celebrating the county’s
wonderous produce and the unmissable tar barrels
roll in Ottery St Mary on 5th November.
Try the Falmouth Oyster Festival from 13th
to 16th October if you’re of a fishy disposition and
the Mendip Food Festival runs from 21st
to 30th October. Dunster
by Candlelight on 2nd and 3rd December is a
magical event and really makes a great start to the Christmas
month. |

| Weymouth, where the first phase of The National
Sailing Academy opened in June, is set to host
all the sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games. You can
give sailing a try at a number of sailing schools around
the West Country. Try the
Falmouth School of Sailing or Devon
Sailing in Dartmouth or see
http://www.dolphindiving.com/sailschools.htm for a list
of schools and their contact details throughout the region.
And if you would prefer to just watch, this summer there
are plenty of sailing events taking place in the South
West:
At Teignmouth, The National and World Fireball
Championships from 6th to 21st August; there
are two races back-to-back each day involving over 170
boats. www.Fireball-Worlds.com
And
The Fastnet race starts on 7th August
from Cowes. Yachts have to ‘weather’ headlands
along the south coast down to Land’s End before
heading for the open ocean and the Fastnet Rock.

There are regattas at Falmouth from
6th-13th August and Salcombe 1st-7th August.
In our June newsletter, we told you about the Tall
Ships Race to Santander. This starts from Torbay on
3rd September. To coincide with this event, Torbay will
take on a distinctly Spanish flavour with attractions
such as a giant paella, flamenco dancers and live
music. We have five properties still available
that week in the area, three of which can accommodate
12 or more. Why not see if you can get a party together
for what is sure to be a colourful week? |

 |
| Later in August, from 13th-21st, for the fourth year running
The National Whale and Dolphin Watch gets
underway all round the British coastline. Thousands of people
participate to gather data on the status of whale, dolphin
and porpoise populations. If you’d like to join in
go to www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk. |
| If you don’t have sea legs, how about some steam
power? Go to Truro on 19th-21st August to see one
of the largest steam rallies in the country with
approximately 125 steam driven vehicles, plus heavy horses,
a fairground, crafts and models. |
| We’d like to introduce some more new properties
to you. Helpful Holidays team members inspect every property
and will give you frank, honest and unbiased advice to help
find the right one for you. |
| Whatever you decide to do this summer, we hope you enjoy
it and we look forward to welcoming you to the South West
again very soon.
Best Wishes
Moray Bowater
