The place:
Parracombe: tiny village (great pub, medieval church with famous Georgian interior, PO/shop) in a valley midway between Lynton/Lynmouth, 8 miles, and Combe Martin, 6 miles. This is steep, dramatic, deep-valleyed, farming, wooded and moorland country: very beautiful. Wide sandy beaches at Woolacombe and Croyde, about 12 miles.
The property:
... 2 miles west of Parracombe, in its own deep, typically Exmoor valley of a little river rushing through oak woods to Hunter’s Inn and the sea at Heddon's Mouth, an 18th cent. farmhouse with integral indoor heated swimming pool (24' x 12' and 2’6" to 5' deep, available 26 March to 6 November and over Christmas and New Year) surrounded by 10 acres of its own garden (barbecue), woods, orchard, three small unfenced lakes and meadows. Lots of public footpaths, leading via woods and stream or over the hill to Hunter’s Inn and Heddon's Mouth. The main part of the house is original; two wings were added later. Hall with cloakroom (loo/washbasin); living room with huge ox-roasting inglenook (open fire); second living room (approx 27' x 18') with open fire, grand piano (tuned), books, games, wood floor, step down to French windows to terrace with wonderful views to the high moorland of Trentishoe Down. Pretty fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, electric ‘range’ with double oven) with farmhouse-style table/chairs seating 6, in centre; boot room (freezer); scullery (sink, washing machine, tumble drier); loo/washbasin; door to swimming pool. Dining room with oak refectory table (a squash for 14). Two staircases up to six bedrooms, all with pretty views - master double (5’ bed) with balcony, a double with 5' bed and washbasin, a double with single futon (linen not provided) and washbasin, another double, and two twin rooms, three bathrooms (suites, two plus hand-showers), two with separate showers. TV/video. Also, an annexe called Trout Cottage (internal as well as external access) - rather sweet little living/dining/kitchen (hob) from which 6 steps down to double bedroom with en suite shower-room (suite). |
